Sun Theatre
The Yarraville Sun at Night by Kerrie Gottliebsen celebrates the iconic Sun Theatre in Yarraville. I decided on a night backdrop for this illustration as that’s when I believe the Sun truly shines. The excitement of getting a car spot out the back, having a scotch over the road and discovering they still have peppermint choc-tops left in the freezer is the start of a brilliant night.
The famous inner west destination originally opened in 1938 as a single screen cinema. The Sun Theatre forms a much loved and nostalgic part of Victoria’s cinema scene. Sun theatre first dates, children’s parties, private screenings, famous choc tops, post movie drinks at a local bar or a browse in the book shop are synonymous with Yarraville.
Today it’s an eight screen cinema attracting movie lovers from not only Victoria but worldwide. Even Quentin Tarantino, Samuel L Jackson and Kurt Russell popped in for the 70mm screening of the Hateful Eight.
