Werribee State Rose Garden

The Werribee State Rose Garden artwork by Kerrie Gottliebsen celebrates the Victorian State Rose Garden, open throughout the year, but ablaze in colourful flowering glory between September and March.

Both of my children were born in October and November and I have photos of me sitting on various Rose Garden park benches holding my babies in their first weeks of life.

There are a number of times throughout the year which make for a memorable visit. The first flush of blooms are at their peak in November then in March, when the autumn flush of modern roses make it an excellent time to see masses of flowers. There are however some blooms in the Garden from early October until late July.

The first roses were planted in October 1981.  The Garden was officially opened to the public in November 1986.  The Heritage Border was added in 1997 and extended in 2000.  The Australian Leaf was planted in 2000 and officially opened in 2001.  The David Austin Bud was also planted in 2000 and officially opened in 2001.

There are about 5,500 rose varieties covering about 5 hectares cared for by a dedicated group of volunteers called the Victoria State Rose Garden Supporters Group.   https://www.vicstaterosegarden.com.au/

The Garden comes under the control of Parks Victoria. The Mansion at Werribee Park and their staff assist the supporters by arranging for lawn-mowing, watering, disease control programs, removal and disposal of garden waste,  and other tasks in co-operation with the Supporters.
