Description
This artwork by Kerrie Gottliebsen celebrates the stunning K Road Cliffs, located on the Werribee River in Werribee South, known for their sculptural red clay formations. I made a few visits to the Cliffs when deciding on the image for the artwork and find the scenery breathtaking.
The area is a significant habitat for migratory birds, a popular fishing spot, and offers amazing views. The area’s history includes the river’s role in shaping the landscape over millennia, with evidence of a volcanic past and formerly higher sea levels.
K Road Cliffs Geological Formation:
The K Road Cliffs are a result of the Werribee River carving into the Werribee delta over time, exposing the underlying geological formations.
Geological Features:
The cliffs reveal basalt rocks from a former volcanic age, quartz, and limestone, creating a variety of colours.
Cultural Significance:
The area is an important cultural landscape, providing habitat for various birds, fish, and other animals, as well as edible plants, which would have been a reliable food source for First Nations peoples.
Werribee River:
The Werribee River, which flows through the area, has a rich history, with the nearby diversion weir built in 1910 to supply water to the Werribee South market garden region.
Traditional Owners:
The Werribee River area is within the traditional lands of the Bunurong and Wadawurrung peoples, the Traditional Owners of the east and west side of the Werribee River, as well as the Wurundjeri Woi Wurrung on the northeast.
The K Road Cliffs offer opportunities for walking, fishing, kayaking, and enjoying the scenic views. The K Road Cliffs are located on the banks of the Werribee River, adjacent to Werribee Park Golf Course.
The name Werribee means “backbone” or “spine” in the traditional language, possibly referring to the shape of the Werribee River valley.
