Description
The Spotswood Way and Works artwork by Kerrie Gottliebsen celebrates the Victorian Railway’s former Workshop situated on 4.7 hectares at 561-569 Melbourne Road, seven kilometres west of the city.
Designed by James Fawcett and constructed in 1927, it has strong links with the Spotswood community as the remnants of what was once a major employer within this area over many years of operation.
The land also includes trees associated with the period the factory was established. Most of them appear to have died, but a few beautiful Canary Island Date Palms are still standing.
The area is undergoing a significant development with the only remaining building part of the former Way & Works workshops featured in the poster.
Set behind a barbed wire fence and set at an angle near the front of the site, the heavily graffitied and vandalised workshop features a neo-Grecian design and a parapet bearing the words ‘VR Ways & Works Workshops’.
Thankfully this workshop has been saved as part of the overall redevelopment for future generations to enjoy.
The Spotswood Way and Works artwork is available in A4, A3, A2, A1 and the super enormous A0.
