Description
The Spotswood Hotel Sky artwork by Kerrie Gottliebsen celebrates the historic pub in Hudsons Road Spottswood. It was originally opened in 1888 as the Spottiswoode family hotel. George Spottiswoode built the hotel, but his father (also John) also built the suburb. He bought land that is now Spotswood in 1841, eventually dividing and selling it off.
You might know the Spotty Hotel for its food and friendly atmosphere, but the pub has an incredible history as told by the the Westsider. This includes hold ups, elite political links, arrests, bikies, strippers, strikes, and stabbings.
Conveniently located opposite the Spotswood train station, the area is a beacon for westies looking for amazing coffee and cafes. I’ve had a few great times at the pub over the years, highlighted by a memorable duck risotto.
The revival of the Hudsons Street shopping strip and a proud, close-knit community has seen the area become a great place to live or visit.
One of my favourite icons of Spotswood remains Bachar Houli who played for the Spotswood Football Club. Thank you to westies Jim Hevey, Tony Mead and Donna Jackson for their incredible curiosity, inspiration and research on the Spotswood area.
The Spotswood Hotel Sky artwork is available in A4, A3, A2, A1 and the super enormous A0.
