Seddon Advieh Orange

This artwork by Kerrie Gottliebsen celebrates Seddon’s iconic Advieh cafe in Gamon Street.

Advieh didn’t begin like most cafes. When Gene Kapaufs got a call from his mum, Sandra Farrugia, during the 2010 Commonwealth Games in New Delhi, she wasn’t just wishing him luck, she had found a pet supply store in Seddon and wanted to turn it into a cafe. With no business plan, but plenty of heart, the pair launched Advieh.

Named after a Persian spice blend, Advieh blends Middle Eastern and Mediterranean flavours with a relaxed, rustic charm. The space is cosy and mismatched, some furniture handmade by Kapaufs himself. The menu is fresh, colourful and vegetarian-friendly, offering dukka, hummus, falafel, lentil salads, Turkish sausage, and syrup-soaked orange cake with cardamom.

Their coffee is from Five Senses, and produce comes from nearby Footscray Market, and there’s a dog-friendly courtyard to linger in. Over time, and with two cafe makeovers, Advieh has become a much-loved Seddon staple, now joined by its little sister, Little Advi, in Yarraville.

From wrestling mats to mismatched tables, Advieh is proof that a good story and great food can go a long way.
