Description
The Point Cook artwork by Kerrie Gottliebsen is dedicated to the Cheetham Wetlands, a wonderful spot to take in spectacular views of colourful wetlands of various shades of red, pink, green and grey, the Dandenongs, the city skyline and Port Phillip Bay.
The wetlands are 420 hectares of artificial and natural lagoons, created on old salt works land on the western shores of Port Phillip Bay approximately 20 kilometres southwest of Melbourne. The wetlands consist of stunning lagoons and saltmarsh that provide a haven for birds, flora and fauna and are internationally protected under the Ramsar Convention for their precious habitat.
The observation tower is a 1.5km (3km return) walk from the car park. There’s a drinking fountain located at the observation tower but no toilets, so if you have little ones it is possible to park your car at the Saltwater estate and take a much shorter walk across to the observation tower.
A sign located at the site acknowledges the traditional owners “Aborigines have inhabited Australia for over 40,000 years. The land on which you walk has been part of the land of the Kulin Nation comprising the Boon Wurrung, Daung Wurrung, Dja Dja Wurrung, Watha Wurrung and Woi Wurrung. It is under the custodianship of Wurundjeri People of the Woi Wurrung language group.”
The Point Cook Cheetham Wetlands View artwork would make a great gift for lovers of Melbourne’s West, Point Cook and the Cheetham Wetlands and is available in A4, A3, A2, A1 and the super enormous A0.
