Description

The Geelong Eastern Beach travel poster artwork by Kerrie Gottliebsen is dedicated to Geelong’s Eastern Beach, an iconic destination  located on the city’s stunning waterfront.

The Eastern Beach reserve is backed by steep grassy slopes that lead down to the water. On these hills are some of Geelong’s most magnificent palms, peppercorn and cypress trees. This reserve also includes terraced lawns and is a very popular place for picnics and playing ball games. It includes an adventure playground, numerous rotundas, seats and barbeques.

Eastern Beach History

The grand white Spanish staircase and surrounding terraces were opened in 1929. The staircase ascends these slopes connecting the beach and facilities to the road above. Half-way up is a beautiful fountain surrounded by statues of cranes and tortoises – replicas of the originals which are now kept safe in the Botanic Gardens. There are spectacular views of the promenade, Corio Bay and the You Yangs from the staircase and terraces. It is a popular place for wedding photographs as is Corio Villa, a grand 1856 house across the road which also has glorious views. This house and the neighbouring properties are some of Geelong’s most expensive and sought after addresses.

Eastern Beach also has a kiosk with the Beach House restaurant upstairs and an alfresco dining area out the front. This building is made of red brick in the art deco style and was designed as a chalet on the original plans. Nearby there is also a dressing room pavilion with a terracotta-tiled roof and a paved area for lifesavers.

The reserve offers a popular floating island, enclosed sea baths, children’s pool and boardwalk. They are the backdrop for wonderful memories dating back to the 1930’s when the sea baths were originally built. I love the whole deco look of the area. It’s truly beautiful.
